Answer: Introduction: Recruitment selection, work life balance and managing diversity are the challenging activities of human resource management. The paper will focus on reflection upon the above-stated topics. Recruitment can be defined as attracting a pool of talent to the organisation (Banu and Devi, 2014). Selection can be defined as choosing the best suitable candidate from the above pool of talent (Ekwoaba, Ikeije, and Ufoma, 2015). Work life balance is a situation of attaining equilibrium in work commitments and personal responsibilities (Haar, Russo, Sue and Ollier-Malaterre, 2014). Workforce diversity can be described as the similarities and differences that exist among the workforce. These can be in terms of culture, physical abilities gender, race, nationality, religion and sexual orientation (Saxena, 2014). I learned about them and their various applications during my college. In my college, we were given a project. The project included tasks related to arts, management and information technology. There were five team leads and five assistant team leads in the class. Team leads had to recruit and select students from rest of the college and one assistant were given to them for any kind of help. Initially by learning about the process of recruitment and selection I though this is an easy process but after working on it practically I realised the process is much more challenging than it seems. This basic reason which made the task challenging was competition in the class for hiring the best ones and deciding whether the particular candidate will be able to accomplish the task or not. I had to face this challenge the college level but I realised that in the real market places the completion would at much greater skill making the process challenging for managers. I and my assistant, first o f all, drafted what are the requirements of the project and what type of work needs to be done. After drafting the job requirements I designed various posters in electronic format to attract students from different departments. I highlighted the benefits that students can get by participating in our project and how could this experience be helpful to them. I circulated this opportunity with the help of social media. The next thing that was required to be done was sourcing. Sourcing here was not much challenging as I had to pick the students only from the college. I tried to reach suitable candidates through social media and also with the referrals of our friends. After this, I received applications from the interested students. My focus was more on the recruitment task so that I can get a large number of potential candidates. For selection to be effective it is necessary to have a large number of potential candidates to choose from. It is also very important to ensure that the selection procedure should be fair so that organisation has chances to attract talented workforce in the coming future. (Nabi, Wei, Husheng, Shabbir, Altaf, and Zhao, 2014). According to applications, I did the initial screening. I choose the applications that can fulfil the tasks of the project and rejected the rest. After the initial screening, I had a telephonic conversation with the selected candidates. On the basis of telephonic conversation, some more candidates were rejected due to different reasons. A lot of selected candidates was now called for personal interview. Drafting the questionnaire for the personal interview was the much challenging task. I drafted the questionnaire for the jobs related to my subject knowledge and took help from the people of other departments for rest of the interview questionnaires. On the day o f the final interview, I was more nervous than the students but I gathered the strength and went ahead for the process. I interviewed different candidates with different skill set and aspirations. After the interview process, I gave a deep thought to each candidate and on the basis of the aggregate of their positives and negatives I selected the best suitable candidates. I communicated them about this over the phone and gave them the time of two days to respond. Out of the candidates that I had selected few were hired by others also. Majority of the students accepted the offer whereas few denied. At the time of the interview, I had also prepared the list of next best alternatives. I approached those candidates and gave them the offer. Those candidates accepted the offer. Next day I organised the meeting of selected team members and introduced them to each other and their respective tasks. The procedure that I career helped me to learn various things. I helped me to develop my interp ersonal skills. I learned how to get over nervousness and move ahead. The experience taught me the polite way of refusing the people, so that scope for approaching them in future still remains. This practical experience gave me a basic idea of what are the potential issues that can occur and how managers handle various issues at an organisational level. It also gave me a basic practical knowledge of the process. My next experience with the recruitment and selection was at the time of my internship. The process but on a vast scale, something that was new to me was the system of recruitment of the organisation. The organisation had e recruitment system. This system recruits the people online with the use of web technologies. For the organisations dealing in a competitive world, it is regarded as a boon. It provides ease and various other advantages over traditional methods (Lakshmi, 2014).While handling the e recruitment system I learned how the process of recruitment can be made easy with the use of technology. I also analysed that the cost that was incurred in the traditional recruitment process was much higher than the e recruitment process. The only drawback that I found with the system is that checking the authenticity in the online recruitment process is challenging. Also, it is solely dependent on the internet, therefore, any disturbance in the technology can affect the process. During my internship, I came across the issues of managing workforce diversity and various work life balance related issues of the organisation. I was an intern in the HR department of the organisation. My organisation was an MNC and the employees it belonged to various nations, ethnicity and races. Interning in the HRM department of the organisation helped me to know how diversity can be useful for the organisation and how it can create issues for the organisation. My task was basically to assist my manager and clearly, observe what he does in different situations. Our organisation had an issue that leaves policy of the company was allowed leaves only on the occasions and national holidays of the native country. This created the problem for employees who belonged to other cultures and nationalities. This resulted in a reduced organisational commitment from the expatriates. To overcome this issue manager came with the policy of voluntary leaves for all. According to this policy, employees were given a fixed number of leaves which they can take voluntarily. This created harmony amongst the diverse workforce. Their organisational commitment also increased as they thought that organisation also respects and understands their needs. Throughout my training period, I observed that diverse workforce was beneficial in bringing the creativity and innovation to the organisation. I have seen people coming up with different productive ideas on a particular thing or situation. The challenges that were encountered are fighting discrimination. I have experienced a situation where new employees were discrimination on the basis of language. The majority population in the organisation was English speaking wher eas the newly appointed employees were Spanish speaking. They felt discrimination in the organisation. They were not involved in the groups. They were treated as left outs. This created the feeling of humility among the Spanish speaking group. To overcome this issue my manager made some efforts that prove fruitful. First of all, he had a discussion about the issue with the English speaking population. He explained to them what the other group is going through. He also organised various ice breaking activities to improve the communication between the groups. These activities gradually brought the positive results for the organisation. From the efforts of my manager, I learned how challenges in managing diversity in the organisation can be met. I also noticed that cultural sensitivity is a very important quality that a manager should possess. Cultural sensitivity can be defined as identifying the cultural difference and respecting those differences. It can also be defined as acceptation and integration of differences (Arell-Sundberg, Horghag en, Hansen, and Jacobsen, 2017). I also learned that in culturally diverse workforce employees may get offended very quickly. For instance, we have two employees one from Japan and other from the USA. The gesture of hugging is very common in the USA, but when the employee from the USA did this with Japanese employee he got offended. Here none of the parties was at fault. To avoid such kinds of issue in the future my manager asked me to prepare a power point presentation for employees. The presentation consisted of the different social and cultural practices of people of different nationalities. It consisted of common gestures in different nations and their respective meanings. The employees were given knowledge of each others culture to establish harmony among them. The presentation also contained guide lines about what is the accepted culture in the organisation, so that knowingly or unknowingly employees do not hurt each other. This was helpful to employees as well as enhanced my learning. I also came to know abou t various cultures. This experience also developed my insights about managing the diverse workforce in the organisation. After the issue of managing the diverse workforce the other major issue that raises challenges in the organisation work life balance of employees. In the organisation where I was a trainee many employees complain about they did not get their personal space, they are stuck or disturbed by professional work anytime. This adversely affects employees performance because they are the stress level in employees is increased. Younger people cannot work like their parents did. Todays generation demands more freedom and control of their life, they want private space and have various other priorities like friends, family, health and many others (Ramsdal, 2016). In my organisation, I have seen a female employee resigning because anytime disturbance from the office creates troubles for her. She was from the marketing department and required to handle clients. She had to handle the clients other than hours of her shift. She was not able to give time to her family and herself. She managed t for two months but finally to resign after two months and the reason was clear. After that incident management of the organisation realised the importance of work life balance. My manager invited the suggestions from the whole team. The major decisions that were taken in this regard were no employee will be call for work after his shift, they will not be asked to stay in office for longer hours, they were allowed some leaves that they can take within the prior notice period, some employees were also given dinner or holiday packages and weekly fun activities were also conducted in organisation. I was one who has to seek opinions of everyone and then report to the manager. After implementation of these decisions the results were positive the employees were more satisfied and stress level was low. It can be concluded that globalisation as introduced to various challenges and opportunities. The thing is similar for human resource management; there are challenges as well as opportunities. Overall my college and internship experience was helpful in providing me with the practical learning about potential challenges that can arise in recruitment and selection, in managing the workforce and managing work life balance of employees. It provided me with the learning experience of how to deal with those issues and how to convert negatives into positives. My learning will definitely help me in my future jobs. Bhagavad-Gita The Bhagavad-Gita begins with the preparation of battle between the two opposing sides: on the left stands the collected armies of the one hundred sons of Dhritarashtra and on the right lies the soldiers of the Pandava brothers. Warring relatives feuding over the right to govern the land of Kurukshetra, both forces stand poised and ready to slaughter one another. The warrior Arjuna, leader of the Pandava armies, readies himself as his charioteer, the god Krishna, steers toward the opposition when the armies are ready to attack. Arjuna stops Krishna short before the two sides clash together. Hesitation and pity creeps into Arjuna's heart as he surveys his family and relatives on the other side; he loses his will to win at the cost of the lives he still loves. As Arjuna sets down his bow and prepares for his own death, the god Krishna begins his council with Arjuna, where Krishna uses various ideas on action, self-knowledge, and discipline to reveal to Arjuna the freedom to be attained from the suffering of man once Arjuna finds his devotion to Krishna. Before Krishna begins his teachings, Arjuna analyzes his emotions and describes to Krishna the way his heart feels. "Krishna, I seek no victory, or kingship or pleasures" (The Bhagavad-Gita, p. 25). Arjuna admits that he stands to gain nothing of real worth from the war. He knows he cannot consciously triumph over family for his own wealth and glory. "We [Pandava brothers] sought kingships, delights, and pleasures for the sake of those assembled to abandon their lives and fortunes in battle" (The Bhagavad-Gita, p. 25). Arjuna continues on to state that once the family is destroyed and family duty is lost, only chaos is left to overcome what remains. He goes so far as to describe how chaos swells to corrupt even the women in the families, creating disorder in society. Arjuna tells Krishna that the punishment for men who undermine the duties of the family are destined for a place in hell. Finally, Arjuna asks Krishna which is right: the tie to sacred duty or reason? Krishna begins his explanation by stating that all life on earth is indestructible. "Never have I not existed, nor you, nor these kings; and never in the future shall we cease to exist" (The Bhagavad-Gita, p. 31). Because life has always been, reasons Krishna, then how can man kill or be killed when there is no end to the self? Also, Krishna tells Arjuna that his emotions of sorrow and pity are fleeting, and that endurance is all that is necessary to outlast the temporary thoughts. "If you fail to wage this war of sacred duty, you will abandon your own duty and fame only to gain evil" (The Bhagavad-Gita, p. 34). Krishna reinforces the idea of dharma, reminding Arjuna of the consequences faced when one does not fulfill the duty set before him. "Your own duty done imperfectly is better than another man's done well. It is better to die in one's own duty, another man's duty is perilous" (The Bhagavad-Gita, p. 46). Doing one's job poorly is preferable to doing another's well. Even if talents lie in a different area, the duty one is assigned to is the responsibility of the individual. Failure of Arjuna to abide by his duty would have a profound effect on his worldly life as well. Enemies would slander Arjuna and companions would lose faith and respect in the man they once held in such high favor. If Arjuna loses his life, then he gains heaven and if he wins then he gains the earth; thus there is no need for Arjuna to fear for his own fate. To complete his sacred duty, Arjuna must perform the necessary actions for the duty to be achieved. "Be intent on action, not on the fruits of action; avoid attractions to the fruits and attachment to inaction!" (The Bhagavad-Gita, p. 36). In the third teaching, the abstinence from action fails because one cannot merely reject one's actions and find success. Inaction threatens the well-being of the physical body, warns Krishna. Discovered through techniques like yoga and inner reflection, action allows the freedom of the self to be found and attained. Once Arjuna loses desire in the consequences of his actions, then a new kind of discipline can be realized. Understanding, rated superior to action by the god Krishna, provides the necessary tools to perform the skills needed to execute the action. When I moved to San Diego, I got interested with a promising career of becoming an Enrolled Agent (EA) of IRS. Although I love writing, I am more fascinated with numbers. Hence, I took the EA examination. It was quite difficult because I had to study and master the information from hundreds of different IRS publications that contains thousands of pages. Yet, I passed the exam in just one take. My tax practice began in October 1987. ... I earned a good reputation within the community and the government sectors. I agree with my family and friends that my business achievement is the most important moment in my life, so far. I enjoy great benefits from this profession and it also enables me to spend quality time with my family and friends. The look on Griet’s face is a look of shock, some anger, and recollection. Catharina gave Griet the pearl earrings because she cannot bear to wear them, nor stand the sight of them since the day she saw the painting. Vermeer betrayed Catharina and the earrings are the biggest reminder of the betrayal, so to move on from the time Griet spent as their maid and rid all those memories from her mind she needed to give away the earrings. Catharina could have given them to anyone, sold them, or even just threw them away; instead she chose to give them to Griet. She gave them to Griet, to let Griet know that she is not mad at her and she understands Griet did nothing wrong. Catharina shows that her anger and hurt comes from Vermeer’s betrayal when she, with tears in her eyes, looks at Vermeer and asks â€Å"Why don’t you paint me? † In which Vermeer replies that she doesn’t understand. Catharina then in a rage tries to slash the painting, but Vermeer stops her. She then shifts her anger to the only thing she can do, which is make Griet leave. Catharina making Griet leave was misplaced anger, it was anger she wanted to take out on her husband and the painting but couldn’t. Therefore to make it up to Griet for making her leave, she sent her the pearl earrings. She was an emotional wreck in tears and screaming, outranged by her husband’s actions and Griet was a weak young girl she could at the time let her anger out on. After a few days of thinking she realized she was wrong and had Tanneke take the gift to Griet. Vermeer not only betrayed his wife but he also betrayed Griet at the end. When Catharina tells Griet to leave Griet looks at Vermeer to say something, to let Catharina know she has done nothing wrong. Vermeer says nothing though and just lets her leave, which is devastating to her. Griet then even tries one more time to go to talk to him before she leaves to give it one more chance, but he just lets her leave. Vermeer is to blame for all that happened, but lets his wife take the blame out on Griet and then lets Griet take the blame that should be his. He hurts everyone in this story, instead of being a man and taking up for his wrong actions, he is childlike. The sudden music that plays in the movie when Griet opens the earrings is a shocking sound, in disbelief that Catharina has given them to her and is not mad. Griet at first is shocked, and you can see it all over her face. Then she clutches them in her hand as to say thank you and looks off in the other direction as thinking â€Å"What should I do now? † I did not think I would enjoy this novel because I’m not very into historical fiction but I actually enjoyed the novel and movie very much. It was extremely interesting to me, kept me constantly thinking about what each character was thinking. I do however wish the ending had a little more, like maybe letting us know where Griet ended up but I guess we are just supposed to figure that out our selves.

Early western civilization just following the feudal period was a very interesting time in Europe. There were many new innovations and problems in the way of life of the people of that time. Agriculture was still the main occupation of the time for most people. Two big problems that the people faced were those of war and poor harvest. It was said that perhaps the largest problem was the problem with poor grain. For the majority of people there was also the problem of land. For these people they either had no land of their own or insufficient amounts of it to support a family even when times were good. Poor harvests also had an effect on government as well. Bad harvests tended to cause the taxes to fall and couldn’t provide sufficient provisions for the army. One thing that did seem certain, however, was that monarchs didn’t help much with their pursuits of glory by means of war and food consumption. Serfs were the main labor forces in the feudal period. However in the â€Å"legal† sense there were really no serfs in Germany. That could be why the freeing of the serfs made minimal progress in Germany. The state needed the flourishing peasants for recruits for the army and for their houses and barns for lodging for the soldiers. For the peasants there were really no luxuries in their lives. They had little furniture and clothing and basically survived on what they or their neighbors could grow. Also what little money they had could only have been spent on items that they could not be dispensed with. Most of their dwellings were also not as clean as those of other areas since the women worked more in the fields. The schools for the common people were very poor. Most of the teachers were not competent enough to teach, the school houses were in disrepair, often the teachers would have to live in the school houses, there were often no separate classes, and the curricu lum was extremely narrow. Transportation was also a big issue of that time. Things moved very slowly at this time, especially goods. Canals and achievements in roads only provided moderate improvements. The real â€Å"Revolution† in transportation did not come until the invention of the railroad. The busiest and most used roads of the time were the footpaths, mule path and local roads of which the best credited to the Romans.

Analysis of Macbeth Essay

Shakespeare uses vivid and powerful forms of imagery to let the audience visualize the setting. Lady Macbeth is portrayed as a strong woman who is attracted to power and would do anything to be in control; she is anything but an elegant and sensitive woman. After the bloodshed begins, however, Lady Macbeth falls an easy prey to insanity and guilt. Her soliloquy (5.1.24-30) shows her decline into madness when she says,â€Å"out damned spot†¦Ã¢â‚¬  There are many examples of visual and aural imagery throughout the play. The murder of Duncan is indicated by the clanging of a bell and the knocking at the gate. Though they are not described in the text, the stage directions are enough to build up the tension. The knocking occurs between each line that is spoken in a rhythmic regularity. There is a great emphasis on the knocking because it startles Macbeth and Lady Macbeth as they quickly try and cover up their involvement in the murder. To add to the intensity, the fact that the entire scene (2.2) takes place at night builds up the suspense as the darkness is used to bring up peculiar components like cruelty and the supernatural. Darkness as a thematic tool is instantly used by Shakespeare in the opening of the play. The three witches enter in â€Å"thunder and lightning† which sets the mood of the play, which becomes Shakespeare’s habitual way of introducing the witches into a scene. Introducing the supernatural and the witches to the audience at the beginning, intensifies the significance of their role. The audience can now ascertain that even when the witches do not appear directly in a scene, the progression of the plot will revolve around their prophecies. Shakespeare reminds us of the gloominess of the play by creating uncertainty in Lady Macbeth’s expectant wait for her husband, which soon becomes nervousness and excitement as he arrives. Animal imagery, a frequent motif, in this case, the shrieking of the owl is considered as an indication that â€Å"He is about it .† The owl, like a raven, is considered an ill omen; an omen of death and represents nature’s ‘messenger-’â€Å"the fatal bellman.† This line appears to minimize the enormity of Duncan’s murder and seems that Lady Macbeth is blaming the bellman. Blood is another motif throughout the play. The language used to describe Macbeth’s anguished state is extraordinarily effective in terms of imagery and detail. When Macbeth looks at his hands and thinks they are a â€Å"sorry sight† and his hand â€Å"will rather the multitudinous seas incarnadine, making the green one red† (2.2.58). Shakespeare uses personification to manipulate Macbeth’s bloody hands as witnesses to the murder when Lady Macbeth urges him to â€Å"wash this filthy witness from your hands† (2.2.50). ‘Themes are fundamental ideas explored in literary work.’ In my chosen extract, there are no specific lines that show the various themes in the play. However, the link between cruelty and masculinity is one of the first themes introduced to the audience. The murder of Duncan is the first in Macbeth’s long line of killings. It soon becomes evident to us that Lady Macbeth provides the brains and the willpower behind Macbeth’s actions. Her behavior proves that women can be as ambitious as men, as she herself wishes to be â€Å"unsexed† (1.5.40); to become more masculine than feminine. Even so, she depends on the manipulation of others, rather than using violence herself. Macbeth asks her to â€Å"bring forth men children only† (1.7.73) and she says nothing to challenge this statement. The hired murderers were also persuaded to kill Banquo by being questioned about their manhood. These acts prove that both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth associate courage or strength with violence; they think alike. The witches’ predictions also spark Macbeth’s need to continue the bloodshed as he is blinded by his overconfidence in them. When Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are first introduced, they appear to have a very strong and caring relationship that seems to be based on trust (Macbeth tells her about the three witches in his letter). However, as Macbeth’s lust for remaining King grows, the audience knows that one murder always leads to another. Because of this, his relationship with Lady Macbeth weakens and is not able to flourish. We notice that whenever they are together in a scene, they are either pretending to be innocent or planning yet another murder. The scene after the murder of Duncan, consists of a range of language techniques. The first clever part of this scene is Shakespeare’s use of a technique known as Elision. It does not allow the readers to witness the actual murder of Duncan. This is an age old tradition used by the Greek tragedians Sophocles and Aeschylus, to allow the reader’s mind to decide on the enormity of an unseen event, in this case; the murder. This diverts the audiences’ attention to the reactions caused by the murder and not the murder itself. Shakespeare uses specific words that have an impact on the reader’s mind. â€Å"It was the owl that shriek’d† (2.2.3) is a very effective sentence. Shakespeare could have substituted this word for anything that meant ‘to scream’ and it would not have had the same effect. This is because the word ‘shrieked’ not only contains plosive consonants (K & D), but also implies a high-pitched, piercing sound of terror or pain, contributing to the strength of the sentence and the recurring motif of death or blood. The order of the sentences used by Shakespeare, or the syntax, is simply changed by varying sentence length and rearranging the order of the words for effectual sentences. A variety of techniques such as ellipses and antithesis’ are frequently used by Shakespeare throughout the play. The antithesis, in this case, is Lady Macbeth. Shakespeare emphasizes her courage to admit to herself that â€Å"what hath quench’d them, hath given me fire†- which shows that she has been drinking too. Lady Macbeth: Did not you speak? Macbeth: When Lady Macbeth: Now. Macbeth: As I descended? Lady Macbeth: Ay. Macbeth: Hark! This piece of text, taken after the murder, shows how Shakespeare uses monosyllabic words to build up the tension and intensity of Lady Macbeth and Macbeth’s staccato-dialogue conversation. Shakespeare also uses a traditional kind of verse known as the Iambic Pentameter (unrhymed). It consists of a ten-syllable line with an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed one (â€Å"da DUM†). The majority of this play alternates between prose and blank verse. Blank verse resembles prose in that the last word of each sentence does not rhyme, however, there are the occasional rhyming couplets: â€Å"Hear it not, Duncan, for it is a knell†Ã¢â‚¬ ¨Ã¢â‚¬Å"That summons thee to heaven or to hell† †¨ The utilization of the iambic pentameter, gives the lines a certain rhythm, making them easier to remember when producing a play. However Shakespeare sometimes uses a style of writing called prose. Prose is a piece of written or spoken language in its ordinary form without a rhythmical pattern or any metrical structure. An example of prose can be seen from lines seventeen and onwards. The sentence structure is short, simple and smart. Sentences like â€Å"Ay† and â€Å"When?† show that the conversation between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth is fast-paced and confirms that they are nervous. Lady Macbeth: A foolish thought, to say a sorry sight Macbeth: There’s one did laugh in’s sleep, and one cried ‘Murder!’ This piece of text shows that Macbeth is affected by the murder. Shakespeare conveys this to the audience by changing the subject abruptly. Verse is much too regular and orderly for expressing madness or is simply not the natural way to speak. In my chosen extract, there are not many examples of verse as the murder has already taken place. Macbeth is in a state of shock and regret, therefore, prose seems appropriate to convey this feeling to the readers and audience. In conclusion, I believe that this scene was the most crucial part of the entire play. Shakespeare manages to build up the tension and increase it until after the murder. Shakespeare’s use of language, equivocation and tragic irony merge to build up the suspense and keep the audience on the edge of their seats. His use of personification and imagery create realistic and very believable characters, which are crucial for a successful play.

Three Truths and a Lie Brianna K. Slone’s poem â€Å"Through the Eyes of a Child† serves to convey her recollection of the divorce of her parents with the underlying question of, why? Slone employs pathos, an artistic use of language, and chronology to allow her emotions to permeate, not only to herself, but also to her audience. At the same time, the poem â€Å"Three Truths and a Lie† aims to convey the life story of an active duty Coast Guardsman who has been subjected to circumstances that mimic that of Slone’s. The author of â€Å"Three Truths and a Lie† implements many of the same rhetorical strategies as Slone; however, attempts to supplement her tactic by adding personal anecdotes and a prevalent rhyme scheme. By utilizing the same tactics as Slone, the author attempts to attain the same sincerity and impact as â€Å"Through the Eyes of a Child†.
